The balance and inner harmony that acupuncture achieves is, for so many of our patients, an ideal antidote to the stress and demands of a busy life.

Even if you’re already living a healthy lifestyle, Acupuncture is a highly effective way to achieve a deeper sense of well-being that can carry you through every day, feeling your best in body and mind.

Evidence-based healing: Acupuncture.

Landmark studies on the effectiveness of Acupuncture in the late 1990s resulted in data so compelling that a consensus panel of The National Institutes of Health issued a statement that concluded:

“There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture’s value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value.”
That’s big news and a positive indication that Western medicine is recognizing the value of alternative medicine. Dr. Sheng has been immersed in the philosophy and practice of acupuncture all his professional life. It’s part of his family’s culture, and it’s always been an important part of the traditional Western medical care he provides in Cincinnati, Ohio.

How does Acupuncture work?

Chinese acupuncture has a history of thousands of years. Unlike the western medicine based on biochemical model, Chinese medicine is based on an energy model. The vital energy Qi inherent within all living things flows through the body along specific pathways called “meridians”. The meridians connect the interior of the body with the exterior. Blockage of the Qi, or imbalance of the Qi causes discomfort, pain, or diseases such as depression, infertility, and sciatica. The insertion of needles at the acupuncture points along the meridians helps body reestablish the balance or harmony of Qi, thus reestablish health.

From the descriptions of the symptoms of the patients, experienced acupuncturists check the patients’ pulses, look at the appearances and colors of their tongues, and make diagnosis. Acupuncture points are decided and needles are inserted to promote natural healing of the body and improve its functioning.

What Acupuncture can do for you

Acupuncture works with the natural energy and healing power present in all of us. It’s been shown to relieve pain, aid in weight loss and reduce the symptoms of all kinds of ailments. Acupuncture is especially helpful for combating the nausea and other troubling effects of cancer treatment, and as an integrative physician Dr. Sheng has long used it in caring for his own cancer patients.

Although acupuncture is not a “cure-all” treatment, it is very effective in treating several diseases and conditions. Acupuncture is most effective at treating chronic pain, such as headaches; menstrual cramps; and low back, neck, or muscle pain. It can also be used to treat arthritis, facial pain, infertility, sciatica, depression, pain from shingles, and spastic colon and colitis conditions. Acupuncture has also been successful in treating obesity and addictions such as nicotine or drugs. Acupuncture also can improve the functioning of the immune system (the body’s defense system against diseases). – quote from WebMD.

How is Dr. Sheng’s style different from other Acupuncturists?

Dr. Sheng uses distal method with most needles inserted distal to the problem area, while most acupuncturists trained in the United Sates use local approach treating musculoskeletal problems. Dr. Sheng’s style is more comfortable, more effective and better accepted by most patients.

Dr. Sheng’s holistic health care balances Yin and Yang while treating local problems. That is his approach to alternative medicine as an integrative physician. His patients feel more relaxed and more energetic.

Is Acupuncture safe? How does it feel?  Is it painful?

You’ll be glad to know that Dr. Peter Sheng, who has extensive training with acupuncture masters from all over the world, strictly follows FDA safety guidelines. The tiny needles he uses are sterile and one-use only, to minimize any chance for infection.

The sensation of acupuncture is different for everyone. However, the needles are so tiny (about the width of a human hair), most people say they can barely feel them being inserted. While the needles are in place at the therapeutic points throughout your body, you’ll relax, listen to soothing music if you like or even take a nap. Many people who undergo acupuncture describe being deeply relaxed during the treatment and calmed and reenergized afterward. Dr. Sheng will always make sure you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare to get maximum benefit from your treatment.

After the needles are inserted, they stay in for 45 minutes. Please budget around one and half hour for your Acupuncture treatment appointment.
